Sounds a bit along the lines of a soldiers return by the wolfe tones. Here are the lyrics for that, dunno if this is any help to u!

I went away to fight a war that small nations might be free
Got a soldiers guns and uniform to fight the enemy
I was trained to shoot my fellow before he got to me
And I danced with death in the mud and wept
And prayed my home to see.
Chorus:
So come over to me darling girl come here me Molly dear.
You are as welcome as the flowers in may you're welcome here to me.
No more I'll fire the musket shot or hear the cannon roar
I've done my time, now you'll be mine
I'm yours for ever more.
While in the trenches there I thought who starts these bloody -wars
And thought of these great Irishmen who died on these strange shores
Then a bomb did burst to the air it trust some shrapnel fire and blood
I escaped it then shot back at them and lay back in the mud.
Chorus:
While I was off in foreign lands, fighting other peoples' wars
Some gallant men were fighting here to free their native shore
You shot our leaders of 16 saw our city sacked and burned
Then you sent us in the Black and Tans to greet our home return.
Chorus:
I don't need your heroes welcome
I don't want your bugle call
No brass band no pipes and drums, no medal badge or star
But give me what you promised me when first I went to war
That's freedom for old Ireland and I'll go to fight no more.
Chorus

I think Fionn has hit the nail on the head! It is a method of the Irish to retain their identity under a government who is trying its hardest to sacrifice this to the European Union. Don't get me wrong i think a strategic alliance among European states has its benefits but we must be carefull to not allow it to progress in the manner it is, where Irish people are losing their right to determine their own future which brave men have struggled for over 800 years for!

Anyway sorry bout the ramblings and back to the point! I think rebel songs gave ordinary Irish people a peacefull way to protest and in the dark old days it gave them some sort of hope for the future. Thats how I would view therole of Irish music anyway, others may feel differently.

Personally I think their main objective was to highlight the injust, cruel and inhumane treatment of the Irish by the British government. This really put the Irish struggle on the International scene and showed up the injustice of Thatchers "rule". In this regards I personally do not think that it was a failure!!

Does anyone know if there is a specific reason why the signatory P O'Neill is used to sign off the official Oglaigh na hEireann statements? Is there a story behind it or is it just a random name they have continue to use like a codeword or the like?

sho sav vok gah vawk! Again that could be totally wrong!

Gary Og posts on this forum so he may be able to advise you where you can purchase the song! Copyrighted material can't be posted on this for legal reasons, plus its not fair on the artists!

wat a terrible injustice this case was. Eamon Cowan wrote a lovely song about the birmingham six called scapegoats which christy moore has recorded.

Tom you will find very few irish people go to temple bar to listen to irish music! It is always regarded by locals as being solely for as you put it "plastic paddies"! Wearing a t-shirt saying H-1981 does in no way mean you are Irish nor neccesarily know much about our history! I would wager that man was not Irish as no Irish people wear t-shirts like that around dublin! The additional lyrics are rarely sung! The schoolboys section of irish rugby games used to always include it and rather than "hey baby let the free birds fly" it was sung "fuck the Queen let the free birds fly"! I also remember at the last election here that a certain Martin Ferris TD of sinn fein was carried above peoples shoulders upon election and the additional lyrics were sung in full, i.e. not just the sinn fein bit which you may expect, this was broadcast live on RTE News. Now Tom I am trusting that even you would not be as ignorant or brash to imply Martin Ferris is a "plastic paddy"!?!

I was in a pub in spain called the Libon Lions and they had a total ban on Irish music! It was owned by an english guy who owned a rangers bar down the road! Needless to say we never returned; we did however have a few sing-songs outside the rangers bar which was good craic!! I think it is crazy that Irish people can be banned from singing their national songs still! For instance the wolfe tones are still banned from being played on irish radio by the government! As another song goes "Let the people sing their stoires and their songs, the music of their native land"! How true! How can "the republican party" ban rebel music from the airwaves and still use this as their slogan on campaign posters! Hypocrites!!

On a seperate point Gary g any plans to play in Dublin in the near future?

Gaibh mo Leith sceal where are my manners congratulations are in order keltic-banshee its nice this site is now back in good hands and i wish you all the best with it!

I got a version of the song, says it is sung by wolfe tones but pretty sure its not them! i will send it to you if you like

You can hear it HERE Click the link and its yours. Enjoy

The song is sung by Ray McCreavy the Wolfhound. They used to be fairly popular during the 60/70's.

Ah right cool i must look in to their music and see what they are like!!!

Can I just ask Janus will you continue to leave the lyrics up for songs on the site that have political conitations? or are these to be removed also?
