Take it Down from the Mast

Chorus

Take it down from the mast Irish traitors,
It's a flag we republicans claim
It will never belong to freestaters
For they've brought on it nothing but shame

So leave it to those who are willing
To hold it through war and in peace,
To men who intend to do killings
Until britain's tyranny has ceased.

Chorus

You murdered young brave Liam and Rory
You butchered young Richard and Joe,
Your hands with the blood are still gory
From doing the work of the foe.

Chorus

This is it.

Let The people sing/Take it down from the mast/This land is my land

For those who are in love
There's a song that's warm and tender.
For those who are oppressed
In song you can protest.
So liberate your minds
And give your soul expression.
And open up your hearts,
And I'll sing for you this song.

Let the people sing their stories and their songs
And the music of their native land
Their lullabies and battlecries and songs of hope and joy
So join us hand in hand
All across this ancient land
Throughout the test of time
It was music that kept their spirits free
Those songs of yours and of mine

Take it down from the mast, Irish traitors,
It's the flag we republicans claim,
It can never belong to free staters,
For you've brought on it nothing but shame.

Why not leave it to those who are willing,
To uphold it in war and in peace,
To the men who intend to do killing,
Until England's tyrannies cease.

Chorus

You have murdered our brave Liam and Rory,
You've slaughtered young Richard and Joe,
Your hands with their blood is still gory,
Fulfilling the work of the foe.

Chorus

Well it was back in ancient times,
When the bard would tell us stories.
Of heroes, of villains, of chieftains in the glen.
Of Elizebethan times,
Through Cromwellian wars and fury.
Put the pipers to the sword,
Killed the harp players and the bard.

Let the people sing their stories and their songs
And the music of their native land
Their lullabies and battlecries and songs of hope and joy
So join us hand in hand
All across this ancient land
Throughout the test of time
It was music that kept their spirits free
Those songs of yours and of mine

This Land is your land
This land is my land
From the northern highlands
To the western islands
From the hills of Kerry
To the streets of Free Derry
This land was made for you and me.

As I went walkin,
In shallow waters.
Hand in hand with,
my little daughters
With the churcbell ringin'
And the children singin'
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

I climbed the mountain,
Saw the crystal fountain.
And I heard a great roar,
From the rocky sea shore.
Her eyes were gleamin'
She cried "Oh daddy"
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

I walked her home by
The old church steeple.
Proud of my country,
Proud of my people.
For the men who cried there,
And the men who died there singin'
This land was made for you and me.

Well Ireland, land of song,
Your music lives forever
In its valleys, in its mountains,
In its hills and in its glens.
Our music did survive
Through famine and oppression.
To the generations gone,
I'll sing for you this song.

Hi

Would anyone have a copy of this medley in MP3 format that they'd be willing to interweb it across to me. I think its brilliant but I cannae find it anywhere?

Any help on where to find it would be much appreciated.

Cheers buddy but I found a copy of it in a little record store. A mate of mine was singing "Shannon waters" instead of "Shallow", had to prove me point as he was arguing the point too much......

'tis the Shannon waters, although if I sing it again I'm bound to start imagining myself with my trouser legs rolled up walking along the beach now. :)

I remember, we used to sing another verse of Take it Down, back in the day. I think it went like this, I don't remember too much about them days to be perfectly honest!!

Well you sold the six counties for your freedom
Whilst we gave you McCracken, and Wolfetone,
And Ulstermen fought for you in Dublin,
Yet you leave us here to fight all alone!

Just popped into my head there, and I now have a real urge to put Luke Kelly on singing it, but it's a bit late and I'd probably get shouted at!, Strong women rule us all!! The revolution will have to wait 'til the morning :)

Ahhhhh, but for some the revolution waits for no one or nothing  :) For even if you can't sing, you can't fight, you can't laugh, cry, or joke at any one moment, it is still in the hearts and minds of those who live and breathe it  Strong women do rule you all :) as I would know ;) and maybe, just maybe, one day the women who have fought and died for the same freedom as their brothers, will gain the proper recognition that is so well deserved.

I seem to only be able to read and post when I'm away, so I'm sorry if my contributions are few and far between. Hopefully, once I'm completely settled, and Joseph approves of me being online, then I'll be able to post consistently :) Till then, I hope that I'll always be welcome.
