Re-reading Toby Harnden's "Bandit Country" reminded me of a song I've been looking for. The song is called "Downing Street" and is apparently performed by the Irish Brigade. Apparently sung to the tune of "The Street Where You Live" from "My Fair Lady", it's about the mortar attack on Number 10 during the first Gulf war. Has anyone ever heard of the song, or even better have information where I could get it from?

According to the book, yes. Two lines of lyrics are given as examples.
"Now as I walk by, I see mortars fly, I'm glad it's not Downing Street where I live" and "Now at Number 10 it's like Crossmaglen... don't you understand, while you hold Ireland, it's not safe down the street where you live." That's all I have. This is the only source I've seen mention the song at all, but Harnden does add that "it was recorded along with Sniper's Lament and The Fighting Men of Crossmaglen on tapes being sold at Jonesborough market" |
