QUOTE(Tom McB @ May 20 2005, 12:12 AM) Simple it's green white and orange. In footie, Celtic supporters of the thick variety call it gold because the can't see the significance of the orange. Dumb bassas  Yes the flag is green white and orange but there is a real reason why it has been called green white and gold. Read this so don't call people "dumb bassas" without knowing the facts!! :P |

You'll Never Beat the IRISH part 1 In 1167 they came to Ireland on the make they were followed by invasions and by conquests in their wake the kings and queens of england made our land a battle ground they took our land, by fraud defeat, by poison murder and deceit CHORUS murder plunder faugh a balla clear the way cheating stealing diddle idle de ducking diving faugh a bala clear the way diddlily i dle de di diddly idle do by the 15th century they held precariously to the pale the invaders were more Irish than the Irish that's the tale, a fat greedy king called henry his dick was bigger than his brain imposed on us his reformation confiscations and usurpation you'll never beat the Irish no matter what you do you can put us down and keep us out but we'll come back again you know we are the fighting Irish and we'll fight until the end you should have known you'll never beat the Irish then the virgin queen elizabeth brought war and turmoil to our land she decimated Munster scorched the earth and all at hand, then james 1st and charles the mad brought out other greedy bands they took the land of Ulster killed the chieftains poisoned plundered CHORUS by fraud and defective titles they cheated Connaught and the west across the seventeenth century from war we had no rest for the curse of cromwell plagued the land till our towns were red with blood then the battle of the boyne was fought by william, james and foreign hoards you'll never beat the Irish no matter what you do you can kill us off and put us down but we'll come back again and exterminate us too we are the fighting Irish we'll fight untill the end you should've known You'd never beat the Irish |

There are two songs you'll never beat the irish. Part one and Part two! both are on the wolfe tones album of the same name. They document irish history. Which one are you looking for the lyrics for? i might be able to dig out the cd if my hang over ever goes! |

I also believe croke park should be kept for GAA games in general but as you said it is right to help your fellow country through a tough spot. I would not welcome permanent opening of croke park or a national stadium emcompassing the playing of gaelic games, I think that the GAA should be permitted to retain their own unique identity. |

QUOTE(Fianna @ Apr 22 2005, 03:24 AM) It's no suprise to me that the Northern GAA Branches voted against relaxing Rule 42, they have more to lose from this. It's easy for people to rubbish the symbolism of sport as a national identity by saying "it's only a game", or "no one nation owns a sport", but the fact of the matter is that when you live in a state where your nationality is actively subdued and oppressed, you'll cling dearly to anything which allows you to express your own national identity, and the GAA does this. I think this is a very good point. Finally someone has expressed a genuine reason for croke park not being openned, and i think it is a very valid point indeed. The problem I had, was with the GAA fans who just said NO it shouldn't be openned and couldn't not back it up with a reason. Many friends of mine fell in to this category so its not as if I am insulting the GAA because I think it is a terrific institution with great members. |

I agree that atmosphere would be great if Ireland were to play football in Celtic park. What I find disgracefull is that has come to the stage where Ireland are being forced to play its "home" matches abroad. The GAA should be made open up croke park for a nominal fee or the government should cut funding. They can't have it both ways! By forcing Irish football and rugby abroad the country is not only missing out on watching their national team but it will have adverse effects on business which is generated by Irish matches! |

The relaxing of rule 42 by the GAA is welcome news to myself and many Irish men and women. I feel it is right that Irish people should be able to enjoy international sporting events within Ireland. Without this decision Irish soccer and rugby would be forced to be played outside its native shores during the redevelopment of landsdowne road! I realise this is a very contentious issue and i would welcome the views of the forum on this issue! go raibh maith agat |

i would just like to lend my support to charlotte! you are more irish than the majority of people i know and have grown up with in the emerald isle. Where you are born is immaterial, it is where you feel you belong and where you feel most at home that matters. |

I have read the whole of this topic with great interest. As a lifelong celtic supporter i fully agree with paddy p88 comments. i think that there is no place in sport for violence or sectarianism of any sort whatsoever. However i feel a club should be allowed assert its pride for its background. How is the flying of the tricolor considered to be an act of sectarianism?Flying a flag is a symbol of your roots and the pride you have in them. If celtic fans are not allowed to show their pride of the country they are descendants of, is this not racial discrimintation if rangers fans can fly the flag of their home without comment. In my humble opinion people should be allowed express their pride of their heritage without fear of intimidation.(whether they be celtic fans in scotland or rangers fans in ireland) |
